Postgraduate research plays an important part in the Business School's academic life. Our growing community of MRes and PhD students is engaged in a wide range of research topics. You can browse their research by subject area or if you know who you are looking for, you can find them by searching on their surname. Look at details of completed theses on The Open University’s Library catalogue.
Full-time MRes and PhD students are based at the Michael Young Building in Milton Keynes where they have good working facilities. Part-time PhD students are normally resident in the UK and attend regular meetings at The Open University Business School. Overseas-based students are only accepted onto the part-time programme in very exceptional circumstances, such as them being a member of one of our overseas partners.
Full-time studentships, starting 1 October 2010, will be advertised from March 2010. The closing date for applications will be 30 April 2010. Applications for part-time study are accepted at anytime during the year, although applications must be received by the end of June to start the following October.
The Open University Business School offers fully-funded full-time research
studentships, currently £14,600 per year. Please see the Research
Degrees prospectus for more details of the full-time MRes
(Management and Business), full-time and part-time PhD study
and for details of how to apply. If, after consulting our prospectus you still have unanswered
questions, please contact our Research Degrees department by

The Open University Business School is an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognised outlet for the provision of training. This is an important quality threshold and ensures that our students are equipped to pursue careers both in Social Science research and in related fields of employment. In addition, students on the MRes can apply for funding for further research studies at The Open University Business School or elsewhere in the UK Higher Education sector.
The research degrees programme at The Open University Business School is not available by distance learning. However, The Open University offers an MSc in Business and Management Research Methods by distance learning which is an equivalent to the full-time MRes.
